Valona - Birch Angel 19cm

A Beautiful Ornament Made from Finnish Birch Plywood which you will love forever.

The Valona angel is crafted from flexible Finnish birch plywood, making it a perfect ornament to hang on a Christmas tree, in a window, or to display on a table or shelf.

This particular angel stands 19 cm tall and is ideal for display on a table, shelf, or windowsill. A battery-operated LED tea light can be placed inside, allowing the light to softly shine through the wood in dim settings.

The 19 cm tall Valona angel is delivered fully assembled. The collection also includes other sizes, such as the 11.5 cm tall angel, which comes flat-packed in a postcard format and is bent into shape after opening. Additionally, there are 7 cm tall angels that are delivered pre-assembled.

Inspiration

Many of Valona’s wooden products are inspired by the idea that birch can be shaped into forms traditionally made from other materials. This concept is reflected in products like himmelis and birch crystal ornaments. The design of the angels originates from paper angels, where the angel’s gown is folded into a cone. Although Valona’s wooden angels have evolved far from the original paper versions, the connection is still visible.

Materials and Production

Finnish birch plywood is used for the angels as part of Valona's commitment to sustainability. The products are laser-cut in two small workshops in the Uusimaa and Eastern Finland regions, with the finishing and packaging taking place in Helsinki. 

Valona’s angels, made from ultra-thin flex plywood, are durable and beautifully flexible in their form. The wooden angel serves as a symbol of hope and light, making it an ideal gift for life’s meaningful moments.

Valona’s wooden angel was awarded Product of the Year at the Finnish Handicrafts Fair in November 2024. Renowned as Europe’s largest event for artisans and craftsmanship, the fair celebrates innovation and excellence in handmade design.

Care Instructions

Wood is a natural material that may react to significant changes in humidity. If the wooden parts get bent, you can straighten them back with the following instructions:

• The bent part is dampened throughout with water.
• The part is then placed to dry between two cardboard pieces or kitchen towels under a weight.
• The warm floor of a bathroom or other warm space suits well for drying.
• The wood withstands straightening if necessary.

A slight darkening of the colour is a beautiful, natural feature of wood. However, if you feel that your wood-coloured decoration has darkened too much over the years, you can carefully bleach the wooden part with a soda mixture.

• Add a few teaspoons of baking soda to a small amount of water until a thick paste is formed.
• Carefully rub the wooden part with a toothbrush, for example.
• Rinse and pat dry.
• Birch withstands careful moistening well.
