Bergs Potter

Bergs Potter - Copenhagen 'Castle' Pot & Saucer - Glazed Port Green

$89.00

On a visit to Helsinki in 2016 I bought my first Bergs Pot, in my favourite store...Kauniste. It is so lovely to finally have them available in our store here in Newcastle!

Named the Castle Pot since it is inspired by a pot made at the royal castle of Fredensborg in 1860. Over time, production moved to smaller potters in Copenhagen, where it was made until plastic pots began to grow in popularity in the 1960s. Steffen Berg found his inspiration in a beautiful pot he saw years ago in a former nursery. Today, Berg potters make the pot in a small village near Lucca in Tuscany.

These glazed pots are something extra special.

Just outside of Copenhagen, in the historic fishing village of Dragør, there is a unique interplay between the blue sea, the ornate houses and the shiny green gates of the paved avenues. It is this enchanting color combination that inspires Bergs glazed pots.

Known as “port green” or “wagon green”—names that call to mind places where this color is seen daily. Developed in the mid-18th century, it was popular in now-historic urban areas, where it was used everywhere from the doors and gates of the town’s finer houses to horse-drawn carriages, benches and street lamps. Together with the earthy ochers and sea blue tones, one is reminded of a bygone era, the same feeling evoked by a visit to idyllic Dragør.

Bergs glaze is saturated with intense color, accentuating the nuances between the different types of pots. Each pot, jar and vase is glazed the old-fashioned way, individually and by hand.

Like Berg’s raw herb pots, the sturdy glazes and timeless colors signal that pots Glazed by Bergs are made to last for generations to come. Quality will always be classic.
